Primary vote Tuesday WASHBURN COUNTY – The primary elections are Tuesday, Sept. 9, and all Washburn County officials up for election are running unopposed.
County clerk Lynn Hoeppner, treasurer Janet Ullom and register of deeds Diane Poach are all incumbents running unopposed for two-year terms.
Wisconsin’s 73rd Assembly District and Congress seats all have opposition, while Assembly District 75’s incumbent has no opposition. Read full storyPermit for gravel pit approved SHELL LAKE – A controversial gravel pit in Beaver Brook will soon be operable, after a conditional-use permit was approved by the Washburn County Zoning Committee Tuesday, Aug. 26, in the Elliott Building, Shell Lake.
The county has been looking to obtain gravel from this site, at Cranberry Road, for many years now. About seven years ago, the county first applied for a CUP to operate the gravel pit. However, many families who lived in the area were opposed to the idea, concerned with safety hazards and environmental issues. A lawsuit against the county about the matter went all the way to the Supreme Court before the CUP application was overturned by the county board of adjustment in 2006, five years after its beginning. Read full storyCity hears from citizens on ATV use in town Regan Kohler 03.SEP.08 SHELL LAKE – A newly created committee formed by the Shell Lake City Council to study the possibility of ATV access routes on Lake Drive and into town, held a public hearing Thursday, Aug. 28, in city hall, on the matter.
At previous city council meetings, citizens brought up the idea of allowing ATVs to access the Wild Rivers Trail, which runs from Spooner through Shell Lake, from Lake Drive and other parts of town. ATVs are not allowed on roads and therefore must be transported by trailer to the trail. The citizens stressed these would be access routes only. The council heard from citizens both for and against. Those against were concerned with public safety, speed limits, pollution and noise, to name a few.
